Radio Decision Paralysis: Choosing Your First Real Rig When You Want It All

It is one of the most relatable moments in amateur radio: you pick up a cheap dual-band HT, catch the bug immediately, and suddenly find yourself staring at a spreadsheet of radio specifications with a growing headache. You want HF, VHF, and UHF in one box. You want a waterfall display, SSB, CW, digital modes, USB and CAT connectivity — and ideally Wi-Fi and a built-in ATU too. Oh, and it needs to work portable for SOTA and POTA, fit in the vehicle, and anchor a home shack.

The good news is that the market has genuinely converged on a small number of radios that address most of that list in a single chassis. The two most frequently discussed are the Icom IC-705 and the Yaesu FT-991A, and understanding what separates them is the heart of the decision.

The Icom IC-705: Full Features, QRP Power

The IC-705 covers HF, VHF, and UHF with all-mode operation — SSB, CW, AM, FM, RTTY, and D-STAR digital voice. It uses an RF direct sampling architecture, converting signals directly to digital data and processing them in an FPGA, which helps reduce internal noise and surface weak signals. The waterfall display performs at the level hams have come to expect from the IC-7300 and IC-9700, and it is baked into the package rather than offered as an expensive add-on.

The "nice to haves" that show up on most wish lists are all included: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB audio/data, and GPS. For digital modes like FT8 or Winlink, the IC-705 connects directly to a computer, tablet, or smartphone without an external interface box. And it weighs approximately 2.4 pounds — genuinely portable for SOTA, POTA, and vehicle use. One POTA operator described mounting the IC-705 in a truck with a seat bolt mount as "beyond AMAZING" after finding a full-sized base radio too large to install.

The critical tradeoffs are power and the absence of an internal ATU. Maximum output is 10 watts on external 13.8V power, or 5 watts on the included battery pack. The missing ATU surprises some buyers given how feature-rich the radio is everywhere else. The practical solution for most portable operators is Icom's AH-705 — a weather-resistant automatic antenna tuner built specifically for the IC-705, covering 160 meters through 6 meters and operated directly from the radio's front panel.

The Yaesu FT-991A: Power and a Built-In Tuner

The FT-991A takes a different approach. It delivers 100 watts on HF and 6 meters, 50 watts on VHF and UHF, and covers all modes including C4FM System Fusion digital voice. The "A" version added a real-time spectrum scope and multi-color waterfall display, so band activity is visible while you listen. Crucially for operators working with wire antennas, the FT-991A includes an internal automatic antenna tuner with 100-channel memory that saves tuning data for quick recalls across frequency changes.

The tradeoff is size and weight. The FT-991A is a capable all-in-one station, but it is not going into a backpack. Many experienced hams frame it clearly: the IC-7300 outperforms it as a dedicated HF rig, while the FT-991A's main advantage is that integrated VHF/UHF coverage in a shack or vehicle context.

The Real Question: One Radio or Two?

The most useful framing is whether your primary identity is as a portable/POTA operator or a home and vehicle shack builder. The IC-705 occupies a unique middle ground — it carries like an HT but operates like a full-featured base station. The FT-991A delivers more power and a built-in tuner but stays tethered to a desk or vehicle mount.

A third path worth considering: pair a dedicated HF radio like the IC-7300 with a separate VHF/UHF rig. You give up the convenience of one box, but you may end up with better performance on both ends and more flexibility for VHF/UHF digital modes like DMR or Fusion down the road.

One practical note for newly licensed Technician class operators: most HF phone and data privileges in the US open up with the General class upgrade. The right radio for someone still studying for General is a different question than the right radio for a newly-minted General heading for their first HF DX contact. It is worth thinking through the timing of both the license upgrade and the hardware purchase together.
